Choosing the Right Oil Processing Line for Different Oil Seeds
Sunflower seeds, soybeans, peanuts, mustard, they all produce oil, but they do not all process the same way. What works for soybean will not work for mustard. What works for peanut will not always work for sunflower. Getting the processing technique wrong from the start costs you in oil yield, raw material, and time.
Below, we break down the right processing method for each oilseed so you can make the right call before investing in a line.
1. Sunflower Seeds - Dehulling First, Then Hot Pressing
Sunflower seeds have a thick outer hull that contains almost no oil. Pressing whole seeds wastes press capacity and adds fiber to the oil cake.
→Remove the hull before pressing and dehulling rate: 85–90%
→Hot pressing recommended: barrel temperature 110–130°C
→Residual oil in cake: 6–9% with screw press
→Suitable equipment: screw oil press + plate filter + batch refining system
→Cake byproduct: suitable for animal feed
Best processing line: Cleaning → Dehulling → Drying → Cooking → Screw Press → Filtration → Refining

2. Soybean - Flaking Is the main Step
Soybeans have a relatively low oil content (17–20%) and a tough cell structure. Without flaking, the press cannot recover oil efficiently.
→Crush and flake before cooking and flake thickness: 0.3–0.5mm
→Hot pressing with stacked cooker at 100–115°C
→Residual oil in cake: 5–8% with screw press
→Soybean cake: 40–45% protein and high market value as animal feed
→Suitable equipment: screw oil press + refining system
Best processing line: Cleaning → Drying → Crushing → Flaking → Cooking → Screw Press → Filtration → Refining

3. Peanut - Hot Pressing or Cold Pressing Depending on Market
Peanuts have high oil content (44–50%) and work well with both pressing methods. The choice depends on whether you are producing bulk cooking oil or premium cold-pressed peanut oil.
→Hot pressing: higher yield, richer flavor, suitable for bulk cooking oil production
→Cold pressing: lower yield, lighter color, natural flavor and suitable for premium retail products
→Both screw press (hot) and hydraulic oil press (cold) are suitable
→Residual oil in cake: 6–9% (hot pressing), 3–5% (hydraulic cold pressing)
Best processing line (hot): Cleaning → Roasting → Screw Press → Filtration → Refining
Best processing line (cold): Cleaning → Conditioning → Hydraulic Oil Press → Filtration

4. Mustard Seeds - Small Seeds, Precise Temperature Control
Mustard seeds are very small, with an oil content of 35–45%. Therefore, they require careful handling, and excessive heat can reduce the oil's distinctive pungent flavor, which is part of its market value.
→Hot pressing at a controlled temperature: 100–120°C
→Moisture control is essential before pressing, and the target should be 7–9%.
→A screw oil press is ideal for consistent production.
→Refining is recommended for retail-grade mustard oil output.
