Latest Innovations in Screw Oil Press Technology for Higher Efficiency

2026-05-11 15:59:26

Screw oil press is a mechanical pressing machine that uses a rotating screw shaft to continuously push oil seeds through a narrow barrel, applying high pressure to extract the oil from the seeds. This pressure creates pressure that ruptures the oil cells and forces the oil out through small slots in the press cage. The pressed solid material (oil cake) is then discharged at the end of the barrel.

Screw oil presses are widely used to press soybeans, peanuts, rapeseed, sunflower seeds, sesame, cottonseed, and other oilseeds. They are suitable for both small-scale oil mills and large industrial production lines.

Input & Output: What Goes in and What You Get Out

Understanding the input and output of a screw oil press helps you plan your production more accurately.

What You Feed into the Machine (Raw Material Input)

This machine accepts a wide variety of oilseeds and nuts, including:

High-oil seeds: Peanuts, sesame seeds, walnuts, almonds, tea seeds, moringa seeds, Sacha inch (Inca seeds), macadamia nuts typically have an oil content of 40–60%.

Medium-oil seeds: Soybeans, rapeseed, sunflower seeds, cotton seeds typically have an oil content of 15–35%, and pre-treatment is recommended for best results.

Process before putting the raw material into the press

  • Before raw materials are put into the press, they must be cleaned and sorted to remove stones, dust, and foreign objects.
  • Must be dried to the correct moisture level (too wet will release less oil; too dry will require too much heat)
  • Must be preheated or conditioned, depending on whether you are hot pressing or cold pressing.

What we get after pressing (Machine Output)

1. Crude Oil: Liquid oil that flows out of the press cage slots. This crude oil contains fine meal particles and must pass through a filter before it can be stored or used for final use.

  • For industrial use or animal feed supplement crude oil may be used with basic filtration only.
  • For direct sale as cooking oil crude oil goes through refining.

2. Oil Cake (Press Cake): Oil cake is the solid material that comes out of the end of the barrel after pressing. Oil cake still contains some residual oil and is rich in protein, making it valuable for:

  • For animal feed.
  • For organic fertilizer base material.

Which method is right for you?

Hot Pressing vs. Cold Pressing:

Screw oil press machines support two methods. Choosing the right method depends on your raw materials and oil quality requirements.

Hot Pressing Process: Raw materials, cleaning, crushing, aging (120–180°C), screw pressing, crude oil filtration, oil storage.

Cold Pressing Process: Raw materials, cleaning, conditioning, screw pressing (below 60°C), filtration, finished oil.

Hot pressing is the more common choice for commercial-scale oil mills focused on output and cost-efficiency. Cold pressing is preferred for premium, specialty oil products where natural flavour and nutrient value justify a higher retail price.

What are the improvements in screw oil press machines?

1. Optimized Multi-Stage Screw Structure

Older screw presses had a uniform screw design that applied pressure too quickly, resulting in uneven oil extraction. Modern screw oil press machines use a graduated screw design, where the pitch between the screw flights gradually tightens from the feed end to the discharge end.

This means that pressure builds gradually over several stages, rather than all at once. This results in more thorough pressing, less oil residue in the oil cake, and higher oil yields for a variety of oilseeds.

2. Stable Temperature Control During Pressing

Temperature plays a crucial role in oil yield and oil quality. If it's too low, the oil cells don't open properly. If it's too high, the oil quality deteriorates, the color darkens, and nutrients are lost.

Modern machines have built-in heating systems that keep the pressing barrel at a controlled temperature throughout operation. For hot pressing, this typically means maintaining a stable barrel temperature between 120°C and 180°C. For cold pressing, cooling provisions prevent frictional heat buildup above 60°C. Constant temperature control maintains consistent oil quality from batch to batch.

3. Improved Drive Systems for Reduced Energy Consumption

Early screw oil presses relied on belt-drive transmission systems, which resulted in energy loss due to slippage and required frequent belt adjustments and replacements.

New oil machines use gear-drive systems that transmit motor power more efficiently and with less maintenance. This reduces power consumption during operation and improves the reliability of continuous production.

4. Integrated Oil Filtration

Crude oil leaving the press always carries with it fine meal particles from the pressing process. In older setups, crude oil had to pass through a separate filter unit before being sent to storage.

Modern screw presses now have an integrated filter located directly below the press cage. This reduces the crude oil's unfiltered residence time, reduces the risk of oxidation, and simplifies the overall layout of the production line.

Complete Screw Oil Press Production Line

A complete screw oil press line includes more than just the press machine. Depending on your raw material and output requirements, a full pressing line typically includes:

Equipment

Function

Cleaning and Grading Machine

Removes impurities, stones, and foreign material from raw oilseeds

Roasting / Cooking Machine

Heats seeds before hot pressing to improve oil yield

Screw Oil Press Machine

Mechanical pressing to extract crude oil from oilseeds

Oil Filter Machine

Removes fine meal particles from crude oil

Oil Refining Equipment

Degumming, deacidification, decolorization, deodorization for refined oil

Oil Filling Machine

Filling finished oil into bottles or drums for sale

For small-scale operations, a basic line with a press and filter machine may be sufficient. For medium to large-scale production targeting refined oil output, a full line including refining equipment is recommended.
